Peter Thomson has been involved in this research project from the outset. He was a member of the steering group that provided feedback on the initial research hypothesis. He also attended the intergenerational workshop, where the differing hopes, aspirations and goals of workers and managers at different life stages were debated. I was therefore very interested in capturing his thoughts on the final report. We met in the beautiful surroundings of the Henley Management Centre and discussed a wide range of topics emerging from the Working Nation research. We touched on the theme of disillusionment at an earlier stage in people careers than perhaps expects, people in their 30’s and 40’s that felt in some way that they’d not ‘made it’. Peter saw this as cause for concern as a significant percentage of the workforce were feeling this way.
We went on to discuss the implications for managers and what could be done for this ‘neglected generation’. Peter also talked about his vision for the future of work and the expectations of the younger ‘millennial’ generations in the world of work.
